Crack Climbing and Traditional Climbing Course | Prescott

Crack Climbing and Traditional Climbing Course

Set in the rugged walls of Sullivan's Canyon just north of Chino Valley, this two-day immersive clinic blends technical crack climbing instruction with a comprehensive introduction to traditional climbing systems. The canyon offers a climbing experience unique to the Prescott region; classic basalt cracks, adventurous movement, and single-pitch terrain that allows for focused skill progression without big-commitment exposure.

Why Sullivan’s Canyon?
Sullivan’s Canyon features two main climbing areas with nearly 100 routes ranging from 30–60 feet tall on both sides of the canyon. The setting provides abundant crack climbing at varied sizes, single-pitch routes ideal for learning and mock leads and flexible sun/shade options; simply drop your rope where conditions are best.

Like much of Northern Arizona, the climbing carries a classic adventurous feel, yet the single-pitch environment makes it a controlled and ideal classroom for developing trad skills.

Who This Course Is For
This clinic is designed for climbers who:
  • Have outdoor climbing experience
  • Are comfortable top-roping and belaying
  • Understand foundational climbing systems
  • Are preparing to transition toward traditional leading
This course does not teach first-time lead climbing. Instead, it develops the technical judgment, gear placement skills, and crack technique necessary to confidently pursue trad objectives.

Day 1: Ground School & Crack Technique
We begin with a comprehensive ground school session:
  • Review of bolted and traditional anchor fundamentals
  • Gear selection, racking systems, and inspection
  • Placing passive protection and cams
  • Evaluating rock quality and placement integrity
  • Rope management and communication systems
Then we move into movement:
  • Crack climbing fundamentals (hands, fingers, thin hands, and introductory off-width concepts)
  • Efficient jamming technique and body positioning
  • Footwork inside cracks
  • Using terrain to your advantage
  • Energy conservation and pacing
Participants refine technique on top rope before applying protection skills.

Day 2: Mock Leads & Applied Trad Systems
Day two brings practical application:
  • Mock-lead climbs placing gear on route
  • Instructor evaluation of placements
  • Traditional anchor construction and assessment
  • Command systems and partner communication
  • Advanced rope management in real terrain
All instruction is supervised by experienced, professionally trained instructors focused on building safe, capable, and independent climbers.

Course Outcomes
By the end of this two-day clinic, participants will:
  • Confidently place and evaluate traditional protection
  • Understand the fundamentals of traditional anchor systems
  • Improve crack climbing technique and efficiency
  • Properly lead and top-rope belay using ATC and GriGri-style devices
  • Demonstrate effective rope management and communication
Most importantly, you’ll leave stronger, more competent, confident and ready to take the next step toward leading on trad gear and expanding your climbing horizons.
